A Winter Palette

A Winter Palette

The word ‘palette’ can often be confused with ‘palate’ meaning taste or the upper part of the inside of the mouth. However palette is a range of colours or a painters board of mixing colours and is used as a base to ultimately find the right shade. So no this isn’t a blog about food or taste, or winter treats and recipes (maybe a few here and there) but instead a blog about seasons and shades. The lighter moments and the deeper times. I invite you to enter this blog with a fresh palette and an open heart.

It is winter here in Australia, slowly moving from August into September and for the last few moments of winter I would like to share a few items in my bag that I carry close to me. I'll start with fragrance first,  my current winter fave is Blanche by Byredo, it reminds me of clean linen - like a blanket of snow in the bedroom.  Mixed with sweet florals like rose and beautiful fresh top notes, I carry Blanche as a perfume without the spritz just so that I can apply it softly to the skin without making too much of a statement. I also carry a spray fragrance by Tocca, called Florence. It is more of a summer scent with its fruity and green notes but Tocca has a beautiful box with the words 'Love Yourself' that I absolutely adore and find essential  to keep myself warm and cozy on the inside. The last fragrance I carry is a body mist by new store Léays called Lovers Touch as a hair and body fragrance - something I can happily spray all over my clothes and make a big 'mess.'

'Mess' - this word has such a bad reputation. I feel mess is essential to make sure everything gets put it in its place - after all how can you be clean without mess? If I'm honest I love a good mess. You find things, you can throw out things and you can create things too. This winter I'm trying to keep my bag neat and tidy, but if I'm truly honest my bag is usually a big mess. I have a big Charlotte Tilbury makeup bag that carries all my lip essentials, some old Nars foundation just in case, and an Hourglass mascara. There's also usually some dentil floss at the bottom of my bag, because I've learned from plenty of trips to get Gozleme that spinach is often a fly on the wall of my front teeth.  Sometimes, especially in the colder months I carry an umbrella and more often than not I carry a portable charger. All these items can obviously lead to mess, which sometimes can be a good thing because it means I'm prepared and I guess you never know what you can find at the bottom of my bag. You might find a tissue for when you need to sneeze, maybe a pair of tweezers? A rain jacket? An anchor? Only joking. Sometimes mess is good. Obviously it's good to be clean, but I think mess can be a good thing too.

For instance, when you're painting, how are you supposed to create a beautiful masterpiece without a messy palette. A palette is there to blend, mix and place a shade then used to be popped onto a piece of paper or canvas which usually starts as a bit of a mess. We all need a palette, a base, a place where we can start off messy and work our way into a beautiful piece of art. Whether it's a messy handbag, a back room or even an artists palette itself - we all make a mess somewhere. If there's no mess, there's no progress.

Stay Warm.
